| 12/25/2011 | “The Word Became Flesh” In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. |

| 12/18/2011 | “On the Road to Maturity” 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you may obey its desires. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. |

| 12/11/2011 | “If There Had Been No Christmas” And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. |

| 12/04/2011 | “Miracle Working God” When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, and many of the Jews had come to comfort Martha and Mary in their loss. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she met him, but Mary sat at home. Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you." Jesus told her, "Your brother will rise again." Martha replied, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?" "Yes, Lord," she said, "I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world." After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. "The Teacher is here," she said, "and is asking for you." When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, saw her leave quickly, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there. When Mary arrived where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. "Where have you laid him?" he asked. "Come and see, Lord," they replied. Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?" Jesus, again deeply moved, went to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. "Take away the stone," he said. Then Martha, the sister of the dead man, replied, "But, Lord, by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days." Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I know that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they might believe that you sent me." When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, "Untie him and let him go." Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary and had seen what Jesus did believed in him. But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. "What are we doing?" they asked. "This man is performing many signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Roman army will come and take away both our place and our nation." Then one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, "You know nothing at all! You do not realize that it is better for you to die for the people than for the whole nation to perish." He did not say this on his own; but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one. From that day on, they plotted to put Jesus to death. |

| 11/27/2011 | “Big Picture” Now it came about after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am." He said, "Take now your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will tell you." |

| 11/20/2011 | “An Attitude of Gratitude” Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since it is for this you were called to be one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. |

| 11/13/2011 | “Unfinished Business” And they rose that very hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them, saying, "The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!" Then they told them what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread. As they were saying these things, Jesus himself stood among them. But they were startled and frightened and supposed that they saw a spirit. And he said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have." And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate before them. Then he said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all must be fulfilled that is written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning me." Then he opened their minds so that they could understand the scriptures, and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city, until you are clothed with power from on high." Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. And while he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple blessing God. |

| 11/06/2011 | “From a Far Country” And he said, "There was a certain rich man who had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that is coming to me.' And he divided his property between them. And not many days later, the younger son gathered all that he had and took his journey into a country far away. And there he squandered his property in loose living. And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. And he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. And he would gladly have filled his belly with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself, he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I am perishing here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.' And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet, and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to make merry. Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And calling to one of the servants, he asked what this meant. And he told him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.' But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, 'Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command. Yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours comes, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed for him the fatted calf.' And he said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It is right to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.'" |

| 10/30/2011 | “Seeing God” On that very same day, two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him. He asked them, "What are you discussing together as you walk along?" They stopped, their faces full of sadness. One of them, named Cleopas, replied, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?" "What things?" he asked. "About Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death and crucified him, but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And besides all this, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some women of our group were amazed. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn't find his body. They came back saying they had seen a vision of angels, who told them he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus." He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. |

| 10/16/2011 | “What do you see?” Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." |

| 10/09/2011 | “In the World, but not of the World” "I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine, and glory has come through them. I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am going to the Father. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe in your name. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. Now I am coming to you. I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy made complete in them. I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world, but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, so that they too may be sanctified by the truth." |

| 9/25/2011 | “Adoption” But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. |

| 9/18/2011 | “Mission Strategy: The Example of Barnabas” Now those who were scattered by the persecution that arose because of Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to no one but the Jews only. But some of them were men from Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists, preaching the Lord Jesus. And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord. Then news of these things came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to go as far as Antioch. When he came and had seen the grace of God, he was glad, and encouraged them all that with purpose of heart they should continue with the Lord. For he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord. Then Barnabas departed for Tarsus to seek Saul. And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. |

| 9/11/2011 | “Our Father? In Heaven?” And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. Truly I tell you, they have their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done, will reward you. And when you pray, do not babble like the pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for you Father knows what you need before you ask him. This, then, is how you should pray: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name," |

When the flood came, the torrent struck the house but could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the torrent struck the house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete. |

| 7/31/2011 | “Let's Make Some Agape” Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this, the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might give life through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. |

| 6/12/2011 | “Spiritual Heart Check” Matthew 13:1-23 1 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it. The whole crowd stood on the shore. 3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: "A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell on the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the weeds. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop, multiplying many times over. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear." 10 The disciples came to him and asked, "Why do you speak to the people in parables?" 11 He replied, "Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables: Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. 14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: "'You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. 15 For this people's heart has become callous; they have ears but are slow to hear, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they would see with their eyes, hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts. And then they would turn and be healed.' 16 But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. 17 For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it. 18 "Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed sown on rocky places is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy. 21 But since the shallow soil, they don't take root. They last only a little while; when trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 22 The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but the worries of life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed sown on good soil is the one who hears the word and understands it. They are the ones who produce a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown." |

| 6/05/2011 | “Portrait of Spiritual Maturity: Abraham” By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out to a place that he was to receive for an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking for the city that has the foundations, whose designer and builder is God. By faith Sarah also, even though she was past her prime, received power to conceive, because she considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude and as the sand which is by the seashore innumerable. By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only son, of whom it was said, "Through Isaac shall your offspring be called." He considered God able to raise him even from the dead, from which figuratively he also received him back. |

| 5/15/2011 | “The Royal Wedding” Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: "The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come. "Then he sent some more servants and said, 'Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.' "But they paid no attention and went away, one to his own farm, another to his business. The rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully and killed them. Then the king became furious. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. "After that, he said to his servants, 'The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding banquet as many people as you can find.' So the servants went out into the roads and gathered all the people they found, the wicked and the good alike; and the banquet hall was filled with guests. "But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe. 'Friend,' he asked, 'how did you get in here without a wedding robe?' The man was speechless. "Then the king told the servants, 'Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' "For many are invited, but few are chosen." |

| 5/01/2011 | “A Portrait of Spiritual Maturity: Joseph” When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "Perhaps Joseph abhors us, and will certainly repay us for all the evil which we did unto him." So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, "Your father charged us before he died, saying, 'Thus you shall say to Joseph: Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin; for they did evil to you.' Now therefore, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father." And Joseph wept when they spoke to him. Then his brothers also wept, and fell down before him, and said, "Behold, we are your servants." But Joseph said to them, "Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, to bring about that many people should be kept alive, as they are this day. So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones." Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them. |

| 3/20/2011 | “The Trial of All Ages” Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, And said, Hail, king of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him. Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man! When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him. The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? Then saith Pilate unto him, Thou couldest have no power against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in the place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your king! But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away. |

| 1/30/2011 | “The Problem with Following” 16 Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?" 17 "Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only one good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments." 18 "Which ones?" he asked. Jesus replied, "You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother," and "love your neighbor as yourself." 20 "All these I've kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?" 21 Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." 22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. 23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." 25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, "Who then can be saved?" 26 Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." 27 Peter answered him, "We have left all we had to follow you! What then will there be for us?" 28 Jesus said to them, "Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my name's sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first." |

And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners." |
